Why Polestar Belongs in Canada’s EV Future

It’s fair to say that Canada is unique when it comes to the EV market. From a range of variables that include geography, weather, and even Canadian principles, not every electric vehicle is a good fit here. We have our needs, our wants, and our expectations –and not particularly in that order.

And that’s why maybe it takes an automaker from a place with similar geography, weather, and principles to deliver what we expect. Polestar, the premium electric vehicle manufacturer, is based in Sweden, and a lot of what it puts into its vehicles is perfectly suited for our Canadian lifestyles. Let’s look at five ways a Polestar fits into the Great White North.

We’ve Got a Long Way to Go

Canada is a big place. Consider this: the Trans-Canada Highway, stretching from St. John's, Newfoundland, to Victoria, B.C., is approximately 7,821 km long –around the same distance it is to drive from Paris, France, to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, passing through 10 countries! And while most Canadian’s daily drive would be under 50 km, it’s nice to know your EV can make a longer trip. The Polestar 3 delivers up to 506 km of range with its Long Range Dual Motor version; the Polestar 4 offers up to 499 km of range with its Long Range Single Motor version.

And if you want to go further, it takes just 30 minutes to charge the batteries in either vehicle from 10 per cent to 80 per cent with a Level 3 DC fast charger. Plugging in at home –which gives you a ‘full tank’ every morning –takes 11 hours with a Level 2 AC charger.

Adventure Awaits

All work and no play is just plain boring for most Canadians. That’s why we like our adventures, whether it’s finding hidden vintage gems on the weekends or exploring the vast wilderness here.

Whether you’re loading up for camping, carrying the family’s luggage to the airport or taking home that retro armoire from the thrift shop, both the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 have a generous amount of cargo space; the 3 offers up to 1,411 litres with the rear seats folded, not including the extra 32 L of space under the front hatch, or ‘frunk’. The Polestar 4 is even more generous at 1,536 L, with 33 L extra in the frunk.

You don’t have to leave your boat, camper, or utility trailer behind, either. The Polestar 3 features up to 3,500 lbs of towing capacity appropriately equipped, while the Polestar 4 comes in with up to 3,300 lbs for the Single Motor version and up to 4,400 lbs for the Dual Motor version. On top of that, Trailer Stability Assist –part of the Advanced Driver Assistance System – helps keep you and your trailer on the road.

And if you’re needing to explore something a little more off the beaten path, both the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 offer sure-footed, dual-motor all-wheel drive, while the Polestar 3 features an option to raise the vehicle by 40 mm to 50 mm by selecting an off-road drive mode.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

An Eco-Friendly EV

A key concern for Canadians coast to coast is the environment; a vast majority want to live more sustainable lives, and for many that also includes the vehicle they drive. And if a reason of owning an EV in the first place is to reduce your carbon footprint, it would be nice to know the automaker from which you purchased is doing its best to do the same.

Polestar, more than any other car company, has made a commitment to being environmentally conscious a core element of its business model. In fact, its Project 0 is aimed at making its full auto production carbon neutral, including its supply chain, by 2030. But Polestar already makes a difference with every vehicle, using recycled materials such as metals and fabrics, along with innovative bio-sourced materials, for production in factories that extensively use renewable energies. The Polestar 4, for example, now has the brand’s lowest carbon footprint to date at 19.4 tonnes of CO2e. And it’s not just about the cars, either: the company’s overall greenhouse gas emissions dropped in 2024 by 16.5% compared with just the previous year.

The Season We Can't Escape

And, of course, an EV must be able to handle our Canadian winters. Blowing snow, freezing temperatures, and icy roads can make driving treacherous, with varying conditions from coast to coast. Unsurprisingly, Polestar seems to know the season and has winter-proofed its lineup.

From available all-wheel drive, torque vectoring for more controlled cornering, and active spring dampers, the Polestar 4 is built to handle the roads. Of course, there are also heated seats, heated steering wheel, heated mirrors, and even heated windshield washer nozzles, to keep passengers comfortable and the vision clear. Polestar also deals with cold temperatures affecting the 100-kWh battery with features such as a range assistant app, pre-entry climate control, and an energy-saving heat pump, all designed to limit energy use and preserve range.

Finally, even the head-up display has a dedicated Snow Mode. Why? Because it changes the normally white text to a different colour for better visibility. Now that’s something that only comes from engineers who know winter.

We Like Features

Traditionally, especially compared with the U.S. car market, Canadians are more demanding when it comes to the level of features offered in a vehicle. We gladly pay for a smaller vehicle if it has a higher level of bells and whistles, even in the base models available in Canadian dealerships.

And being a premium automaker, Polestar brings with it a surprising number of features that bely its minimalist Scandinavian design. For instance, its Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) is a whole suite of 23 electronic features designed to help keep you and your family safer, no matter the conditions, such as Electronic Stability Control, Regenerative Stability Control, and even Collision Avoidance/Mitigation. The Pilot package delivers more features for semi-autonomous driving. All of these come standard on every Polestar 3 and Polestar 4.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Google Built-In with a 15.4-inch infotainment screen are standard, as are heated front seats, frameless exterior mirrors, a key fob with an NFC key card and a digital key, and much more.

More unique systems include Occupation Detection System, which keeps a set temperature in the cabin for your furry friends and displays a message on the infotainment screen to tell people your pet is safe; a solar system-inspired interior lighting program; and five different colour and material ‘themes’ for the interior.

It’s impossible to go into everything here; suffice to say, the list is extensive.

Canadians are demanding when it comes to EVs, and why not? It takes a special vehicle to keep up with our lifestyles, and Polestar delivers with its blend of performance, amenities, and efficiency, not to mention a unique Scandinavian style.
