The Community Behind the Cars

Can a car brand bring people together?

If you asked Patrick Bellavance, the answer would be yes. A business owner based in Rosemère, Quebec, Patrick was interested in an electric vehicle just a few years ago and test-drove a Polestar 2. Captivated by the vehicle’s sleek Scandinavian design, intuitive technology, and dynamic driving experience, he decided to purchase the car. But what he didn’t expect was finding an entire community of like-minded Polestar enthusiasts – and new friends all around the world.

One of Around 1,600 Enthusiasts

When his car was delivered right to his door, a Polestar representative walked him around the vehicle. Afterward, he was told he could call or visit the dealership anytime with questions, as you’d expect. But it was also suggested that he check out the Facebook forum, Polestar Québec - Club des Propriétaires, for a wealth of information for new people like himself.

“So I went to the community, and I found it like, very nice and very respectful, and the people were also very proud [of their vehicles],” he says. “It was very different from other brands.

As much as he was impressed with his Polestar, Patrick was also as impressed with the level of knowledge, the generous help, and the overall friendliness to be found online in the Polestar forum. Patrick is only one of around 1,600 enthusiasts of the brand who congregate on Polestar Québec, sharing photos of their cars along with advice, news, and ideas in a friendly setting.

Polestar Fan Community

“You know, you're proud to see the first picture of your car in your driveway,” says Patrick. “Everybody's like, ‘All right, good looking.’ … It's very fun to communicate with other people who think like you; even though they are engineers or they're a professional hockey player, we are the same in that place. So, it's a very close community.

”This Polestar fan community is so popular that it’s actually attracted the attention of Polestar, the car company. Being a start-up and a small community itself, the team at Polestar joined the online group early on to connect with like-minded fans. They were eager to get members’ thoughts on the vehicles; the forum was more than happy to answer questions.

And then, captivated by the enthusiasm, many Polestar people stuck around, happy to return the favour by answering questions and participating in chats among the group; they are, as Patrick puts it, “encyclopedias of knowledge” when it comes to owner questions. And while this is not an official company involvement, the people at Polestar recognize the authentic passion and extensive knowledge of the forum members, part of why new owners are directed to the group.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Far Beyond Borders

And recently, Patrick had the chance to find out firsthand that the Polestar community extends far beyond the borders of Québec. He was invited to attend an event at the company’s headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden, along with other fans of the brand. The event featured a behind-the-scenes look at Polestar, and included talks with engineers and designers, a track event with a professional driver, a sneak peek at upcoming vehicles, and even a talk with the CEO, Michael Lohscheller, who wanted to meet the group. Patrick was thrilled. “[Locscheller] said, ‘We didn’t want to have an ambassador, because you are the ambassadors.’ We all felt very privileged to be there.

“I met two guys from New York there, and we spoke the same language, you know. The way we think about the brand, even how we like the gold seatbelts and everything. I also talked with a guy from Portugal – there were people from 12 or 15 different countries, 110 or so people. It was very fun to see all these people who have the same feelings about Polestar.”

Something in Common

In his time with Polestar Québec, Patrick has since become the administrator of the group, with his enthusiasm and energy bringing them all closer. And he’s not only bought a Polestar 3 to go with his Polestar 2, but he also has a Polestar 4 on order. So, it’s obvious he loves the brand. But he also loves the entire community involved with it.

“It’s like going to a rock concert, and you look at the people around you,” he says. “You don’t know them, but you know you all share something in common, you all like this brand. It’s the same thing with Polestar.”
