Why a Polestar Feels Different

The brand is redefining what luxury means with innovation, design and new materials

What makes a luxury vehicle? If you looked around the market, you’d think it would be garish designs, bloated performance figures and gimmick technology, with a premium price point to go along with it all. It’s an industry based on decades-old expectations of what a luxury vehicle should be.

Innovation, Unconventional Materials, and Thoughtful Design

Polestar sees what a luxury vehicle can be. The Swedish brand doesn’t need flash, it goes about luxury with Swedish minimalism and quiet confidence. It’s redefining what luxury means; instead of sticking with traditions such as wood, leather and chrome, Polestar focuses on innovation, unconventional materials, and thoughtful design. It feels different and, in this case, different is good.

It feels different as soon as you sit in the driver’s seat. Its sleek design is devoid of clutter, leaving passengers calmer and more relaxed. Even the interior ambient lighting, in white or Swedish gold, and its Star Knit illuminated door panels, give a soft, soothing glow. Instead of a vast array of buttons and knobs, the interior is dominated by one centre touchscreen for simplicity. It feels more like a designer hotel room, a place where you want to be.

That infotainment system also feels different; it’s powered by Android Automotive OS, with Google built right in. That means you get the full functionality of Google Maps and the voice-command capabilities of Google Assistant, and you can even control home appliances with Google Home integration. It helps makes Polestar a better fit for busy lives.

Sustainable is Luxury

Polestar challenges itself and its partners in sourcing premium, innovative materials for its interiors, especially those that are more sustainable. Its tailored knit upholstery, for example, is made from recycled plastic waste; it’s already used in the fashion industry, and it both looks and feels premium. Or its Bio-Attributed MicroTech, which is a vegan alternative to leather made from renewable vinyl and recycled polyester. These and more unique materials prove that luxury can also be sustainable.

The premium feel, the difference of Polestar, isn’t contained to the interior. Driving a Polestar blends electric-drive refinement with European-tuned performance. It’s a union between calm luxury and spirited performance, and it all depends on how you want to drive it.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

Both Serene and Exciting

The all-electric drivetrain delivers near-silent acceleration. But Polestar went beyond to make its vehicles more serene, even at speed. Hidden door handles, flush window glazing, and aerodynamic engineering help reduce wind and road noise. Active dampers in the suspension use sensors to detect and counter bumps in milliseconds, making the ride smoother. The calm, comfortable drive is what a luxury car should feel like.

And by removing the rear window from the Polestar 4, the first-class feel is improved for rear passengers with more headroom and reclining seats.

But if you want performance, those same active dampers can be firmed up with driver selections in the centre screen. They keep the vehicle planted, even in tight corners at speed, for better handling. All-wheel drive with torque vectoring, which supplies power to the wheels that need it most, also adds more control at the limit for more confidence in spirited driving.

Which is good, considering the amount of power on tap. The Polestar 4 Long-Range Dual Motor, for example, has an explosive 544 hp. Perhaps more importantly, the 506 lb.-ft. of torque is all available as soon as you hit the throttle. It’s supercar performance in a luxury SUV.

As a relatively new car brand, Polestar isn’t saddled with a legacy of doing things the same way. It has the unique opportunity to do be different, and to follow a path of sustainability without compromising on luxury or technology. It stands out from the crowd instead of following it, and it’s for those who feel exactly the same way about themselves.
