We might be relatively new to Canada (we’ve been here since 2002), but not to the globe. Mitsubishi started making cars in 1917, which is when we launched Japan’s first mass-produced vehicle, the Model A. If you’re a car buff, you know us for our rally racing legacy. You might remember the Lancer’s debut year, 1973, when it dominated the Australian Southern Cross Rally with a first, second and third place sweep. Or maybe you’re more of an Evo fan – the Lancer’s successor, which won four consecutive World Drivers’ Champion titles from 1996 to 1999.

Speaking of SUVs, that’s our major focus right now. Why? Because Canadians prefer them. We offer four SUVs to meet different drivers where they’re at. And we’ve made major headway in our time here. Both the Outlander and Outlander PHEV are award-winning vehicles. And the Outlander PHEV is the best-selling hybrid SUV in Canada.

If you’re not into racing, our sportscar history might not grab you, but you should know it has influenced our engineering and manufacturing. For example, we used our motorsports lens to make regular all-wheel drive better.We call it Super All-Wheel Control. Using real-time data from sensors, S-AWC sends instructions to each wheel. It improves handling and stability during acceleration, cornering and braking – without the jolty discomfort. On any road, in any weather, S-AWC responds to your driving to give you total control. And it comes standard on three of our four SUVs.

An electric past and future

As for electric vehicles, we’re not new to that world, either. In fact, we were pioneers in vehicle electrification. Mitsubishi started EV research and development in the 1970s, before the topic was even on the map. We were the world’s first automaker to make a purely electric vehicle – the i-MiEV – available to the mass market. And we continued to innovate with our plug-in hybrid technology.
