Here’s how much you would save with a PHEV

For most people, a plug-in hybrid would be as efficient as a battery electric vehicle without the drastic lifestyle change.

The idea of going fully electric with a new vehicle is just too intimidating for some people, and with good reason. Spotty charging infrastructure and the dreaded ‘range anxiety’ mean it might be a bit too big a change in lifestyle and driving habits. But there is a way to emissions-free driving without the worry of running out of battery: a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) offers real-world electric range for most people’s daily driving, but also has an onboard gas engine that adds hundreds of kilometres with the convenience of traditional gas station fill-ups when needed.

The 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, for example – Canada’s best-selling PHEV – offers up to 61 kilometres of electric range, and 687 km total with the gas engine. Don’t think that all-electric distance is enough? You may be surprised; we’ve put together some everyday driving scenarios across Canada to illustrate how a PHEV can cover most people’s daily commutes, especially if you can charge at home for a full battery every morning. And taking advantage of lower, off-peak electricity costs would not only make a big difference for the environment, but also save a lot of money in fuel.

In fact, to show you how much you can save, we’ve also included a handy calculator here. Simply look at your real-world driving distances, your current vehicle, and gasoline and electricity costs in your area, then plug in the data. Even for busy people on the go, you’ll find a PHEV just makes sense.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.
