The Hyundai ELANTRA Is Built to Go the Distance

This stylish compact sedan is engineered for value and durability.

In the automotive world, few vehicles have such different personalities as the Hyundai ELANTRA. This compact sedan can be an economical runabout, a fuel-sipping electrified vehicle, and even a high-performance track star. But no matter the model, every Elantra share two features that go hand in hand: durability and value.

In fact, durability is in its DNA. A 2008 ELANTRA purchased in Granby, Quebec, surpassed 1 million kilometres in 2020, split between just two owners. It’s a testament to the engineering philosophy behind every Elantra.

A Premium Feel

Value means you get more than what you pay for, and that’s certainly the case with the Elantra. With a starting price of just $22,999 (before taxes and fees), the Elantra is one of the least-expensive vehicles on the new-car market. And yet, it doesn’t look it; with angular lines and a wide grille, its radical design and presence make it look much more premium.

That premium theme carries through inside, with a stylish, comfortable cabin made with quality materials. It also features a long list of features that make the Elantra even more appealing. From the Hyundai SmartSense suite of electronic driver aids to standard heated front seats and 8.0-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Elantra delivers an upmarket feel at value pricing.

Four powertrain options are available; it starts with a fuel efficient 2.0L engine with 147 hp. Good for a combined fuel economy of 6.8L/100km, this Elantra is stylish driver with frugal operating costs. Other features such as leatherette seating, ambient interior lighting and a heated steering wheel, among others, are available.

The Fuel Sipper and the Spirited Driver

If you want even better fuel economy, the ELANTRA Luxury Hybrid is best-in-class*, rated at just 4.7 L/100km combined. And with that fuel-sipping, 1.6L engine and hybrid system also comes a Bose eight-speaker stereo system working through a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, dual-zone climate control with automatic defogging system, proximity key and many more features.

For a more spirited drive, the ELANTRA N-Line Ultimate bumps up power to 201hp with a turbocharged, 1.6L engine and seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission. Multi-link rear suspension helps in the corners, while the interior gets a special black-red leather look.

The savings calculator is a guide and not a guarantee of actual savings. Savings are calculated by the cost of your monthly trips (total km x fuel cost ÷ consumption of your vehicle), and how many of the monthly km can be driven in electric and hybrid mode, combining which shows the cost of the Outlander PHEV and the difference compared to your vehicle. Actual efficiency will vary depending on conditions, such as external elements, driving behaviours, vehicle maintenance and lithium-ion battery age.

The Tire Shredder

And then, there’s the sports car of the group, born in Hyundai’s N division and developed on the Nürburgring racetrack. When it comes to performance, the ELANTRA N doesn’t cut corners — but it does clip apexes. A turbocharged 2.0L engine develops up to a blistering 276 hp and 289 lb.-ft. of torque, while models equipped with the available eight-speed dual-clutch transmission and N Grip Shift (NGS) get temporary 20-second blips of up to 286 hp. A six-speed manual gearbox comes standard with the ELANTRA N.

The chassis is stiffened, and it sports an electronic differential and electronically controlled suspension for supreme control in the corners. And yet, the ELANTRA N is still an everyday driver with the same comfort and convenience features you’d find in the rest of the family. Starting at $40,949 (before taxes and fees), the ELANTRA N is the unlikely combination of performance and value.
